Tours to the Republic of Georgia

Updated: Dec 21, 2019

Indulge your sense of adventure and explore the rich cultural sites and heritage combined with exciting outdoor physical activities

While I have led tours to Georgia previously for people aged 50+, this time I’ll offer two with a slightly different appeal.  Both will explore the rich Georgian culture, beautiful cities and heritage sites - with one trip more physically active than the other.

If you love to travel and want to meet new like-minded people whilst learning about your own health and wellbeing, then this is the trip for you.

The first tour (May 20 - 27, over the bank holiday) will be for the 50+ people who want to indulge their sense of adventure. It offers exciting outdoor physical activities, like e-bike tour, horseback riding, tandem paragliding and hiking with exploration of Georgia’s rich cultural heritage and sites in Tbilisi, museums and bazaars in Sighnaghi (the “City of Love”) and a trip to Stalin’s home village of Gori, the UNESCO Jvari monastery and the Cave City on the famed Silk Road.

Certainly, no trip is complete without experiencing the welcoming hospitality implicit in Georgian dining – with its famed backdrop of folk singing and dancing – and two opportunities for masterclasses in Georgian cooking and wine tasting.

This trip is designed for the more physically fit traveller who likes to eat, drink, be merry - and exercise!

For the second tour (June 3 – 10), I will be leading a similar but more leisurely version of the Georgia tour for those of you who prefer to enjoy the cultural heritage museums, city sites, and gastronomic delights at a more relaxing pace.

Of course, these wouldn't be Super Seniors tours if we didn't offer our enjoyable morning movement and balance classes to get you limbered up for the busy day ahead!

Both tours will be small (maximum 12 people) with personally vetted experts sharing their local knowledge to enrich our hand-picked activities. And every element is thoughtfully curated to ensure you won't be sitting on a bus all day.

Please contact me for more details of the itinerary and/or if you want to sign up!!

FAQs

WHY SHOULD I TRAVEL TO GEORGIA?

From the lush green hills covered with vineyards that produce the top rated Georgian wines to the historic watchtowers and churches scattered throughout the spectacular villages nestled at the foot of the Caucasus mountains, Georgia is one of the most beautiful undiscovered countries and a fantastic place for walkers and travelers of every kind.

WHY SHOULD I JOIN THIS GROUP?

You should join this group if you want to visit Georgia with someone who knows the country, understands the culture and is passionate about taking like-minded people over 50+ years old to explore Georgian culture, food and drinks while engaging in health and fitness sessions.

Tony Laliashvili, the tour leader, is the founder of www.superseniorsfitness.com . His goal for this tour is to show you a variety of places and activities that reflect the best of Georgia. The bonus is that as a professional personal trainer, Tony will hold daily 30-minute exercise classes - and one-to-one workout sessions on days with leisure sessions – so this tour broadens your mind and tones your body!

HOW FIT SHOULD I BE TO ENJOY THIS TOUR?

General overall fitness is required and necessary as both tours include significant walking up some stairs and hills. However, there are two tours. The May 20 tour requires good fitness because it includes sports such as cycling and hiking. The June 3 tour is less physically demanding but requires walking – but at a leisurely pace. Comfortable walking shoes are a must!

Prior to your officially joining the tour, you will receive a health form that asks some basic questions. Based on your replies, Tony will let you know whether you might potentially face some challenges and if so, what you might do.

WHY AM I REQUIRED TO HAVE TRAVEL INSURANCE THAT INCLUDES MEDICAL COVERAGE AND EXPATRIATION?

On this tour we will do everything to keep you safe. Every aspect has been checked out in advance. However, accidents do happen and it is best to be prepared. Unlike the UK/EU, there is no free national health service in Georgia, so best to assume the best but plan for the worst. If you have travel insurance for trips in the EU, most UK travel insurance companies also include coverage for Georgia at no extra cost.

WHAT IS THE HOTEL ACCOMMODATION LIKE IN GEORGIA?

Georgia hotels range from cozy boutiques to modern design accommodation. For both tours we will be staying in two different 3 – 4 star hotels with ensuite rooms, free WIFI and security facilities for any valuables.

DO I NEED A VISA TO GO TO GEORGIA?

No visa is needed if you have a valid British passport.

CAN I USE MY DEBIT AND CREDIT CARDS?

Almost all costs of the tour will be covered by the tour cost. However, for the occasional meal or souvenir purchase during some free time, you can use your regular and contactless credit and debit cards. Just be sure to check in advance with your bank about any fees they might charge for non-£ purchases. In small traditional shops, you might prefer to use the local currency, called Georgian Lari, written as GEL. The best thing would be to bring some cash and exchange it for local currency. The tour will direct you to the best official currency exchange office. The exchange rate varies slightly, but it is approximately £1 = 3.8 GEL

WHAT IS THE FOOD LIKE IN GEORGIA?

Georgian food is considered an expression of the culture, so meals are usually not rushed and good conversation is a key ingredient for any meal. Warm, gooey comfort food like khachapuri (cheese-stuffed bread) is complemented with Matsoni (sour yoghurt). Herbs like tarragon, flat parsley, dill and coriander combine with walnuts and garlic for rich fillings and sauces. Fresh fruits and vegetables are the norm as is a variety of meat and seafood for the main part of the mean – served with Georgian spring water and delicious, award winning wines.

IS THE FOOD SUITABLE FOR VEGETARIANS?

There will be food choices for vegetarians.

IS THIS GROUP TOUR SUITABLE FOR SOLO TRAVELLERS?

Our group tours are perfect for solo travelers who have the security and companionship by travelling as part of an organised group in a faraway place. There is a small supplemental charge if you want a single occupancy room.

WILL THE TRIPS INCLUDE FREQUENT BATHROOM BREAKS

Frequent Coffee & Tea and Bathroom breaks are built into the itinerary.

WHAT WILL THE WEATHER BE LIKE IN MAY AND JUNE?

Both months are ideal time to visit Georgia, with warm sunny days and cooler nights. Average temperatures range between 18.0°C and 27.0°C and there is low humidity and very little rainfall.
